THE ESSENTIALS
Blossom Game rules at a glance
Start with the familiar flower format. The original Merriam-Webster game has the specific 12-word limit described below; independent versions may score differently.
Use seven letters
There is one required letter in the centre and six letters around it. Make words using only this set.
Include the centre
The middle letter must appear in every submitted word. You can use it more than once in the original game.
Make four or more
In the original game, an accepted word has at least four letters. Names and words outside its dictionary may be rejected.
Choose your 12
Merriam-Webster gives you 12 submissions, so length and bonus opportunities matter more than finding every short word.
A SIMPLE WALKTHROUGH
How to play Blossom Game
These steps explain the original daily format. We will update this section to reflect our game once it is available.
Read the flower before typing
Note the centre letter first, then separate the six petals into vowels and consonants. Look for pairs such as ST or common endings such as ER, if those letters are present.
Build valid words
Each word must use the centre and only letters shown in the flower. The original accepts repeated letters, so a letter can appear twice or more in one word.
Think before you submit
Try a short word to understand the set, but save room for longer words. In Merriam-Webster’s version, your twelfth accepted word ends the round.
Look for the all-letter word
A pangram contains all seven available letters at least once. It can contain additional repeated letters too. Spotting one early gives you a valuable option to use strategically.
WORK THROUGH A LETTER SET
A Blossom word example
Imagine A in the centre with R, T, E, S, L, P around it. The examples below all contain A and use only these seven letters.
Why STAPLER stands out: it uses S, T, A, P, L, E and R, making it a pangram for this illustrative set. It is not a hint for today’s puzzle. Whether a particular game accepts any example depends on its dictionary.
PLAY WITH PURPOSE
Better Blossom Game strategies
Use a repeatable approach instead of entering the first twelve words you see.
Balance quick wins and long words
Four-letter words can confirm that you understand the letters, but the original game rewards longer words. Keep a short list of candidate words and compare them before using your limited turns.
Change the way you scan
Read the petals clockwise, then group them by sound. If a set feels exhausted, start with a different letter, shuffle the visual order in your mind, and revisit promising beginnings.
Try word families carefully
Check common endings such as -ER, -ED, -ING and -S only when their letters are available. A base word might produce a longer related form, but every guess still needs the centre letter.
Watch the bonus petal
In Merriam-Webster’s version, a highlighted petal offers extra points and can change after a submission. Check the current bonus before committing a long word. Our version’s scoring will be explained at launch.
LOOKING FOR TODAY’S PUZZLE?
Blossom game today: where to play and how to find a hint
For the current official letter set, open Merriam-Webster’s Blossom. This page does not publish the daily letters or answers before our own game launches, so an example here will never be mistaken for today’s solution.
If you want a gentle hint without spoiling a word, list the centre letter, identify the hardest petal, and search for a word family that can contain both. Next, check whether a longer word could use all seven letters.
- Circle the centre letter.
- Pair it with two likely petals.
- Test a prefix or suffix.
- Look for the pangram last.
UNDERSTAND THE PUZZLE
Why a word is rejected
A word can look correct and still fail. Check these causes in order before you assume the game is broken.
Blossom is a word-building game, rather than a hidden-word guessing game like Wordle or a clue-based crossword. You choose words from a fixed letter set and decide how to use your available submissions. That is why planning matters alongside vocabulary.
THE TWELVE-WORD DECISION
How to choose your words in the original Blossom
Finding a valid word and choosing a valuable word are different tasks when you only have twelve submissions. Use this small decision process before you press enter.
Make a candidate list
Spend a minute collecting possible four-letter words, longer extensions and at least one possible pangram. You do not have to submit each word the moment you see it. Keep your strongest candidates in mind or jot them down.
Check length and bonus
Compare a short, safe word with a longer word you are confident the dictionary accepts. In the original game, longer words score better, and a highlighted bonus petal can make a candidate more attractive on that turn.
Keep options for later
Enter a strong word, then look at the next highlighted petal before choosing again. A word you saved may become a better choice on a later turn. Do not burn several slots on near-identical short forms if you can still see longer possibilities.
This is a strategy for Merriam-Webster’s twelve-word format, not a claim about the scoring or turn limit of our future game.
PUZZLE LANGUAGE
Blossom words and terms explained
- Centre letter
- The required character in the middle of the flower. A word without it does not count in the original game.
- Petal letters
- The six outer characters that combine with the centre. Their order on screen does not change which words you can form.
- Pangram
- A valid word that includes all seven distinct letters. It may also repeat some of them.
- Bonus petal
- A highlighted outer letter in Merriam-Webster’s version that can affect the score for a submitted word.
PRACTISE WITHOUT SPOILERS
A five-minute word-building routine
First, write down the centre letter and the six petals. Find two four-letter words to establish familiar combinations. Then search for a longer word by adding one available letter to a base word or rearranging its letters.
Next, identify the petal you have used least. Try to pair it with a vowel and the centre letter. Finally, see whether all seven letters can fit into one word. If nothing appears, take a break and return to the flower from a different starting point.
This routine gives beginners a clear path while leaving the actual word discovery to you. It also works as a gentle way to practise spelling away from the screen.
